This week in the Sun City Communities

Sponsored by

Well, the summer is here and nature’s broiler is back at full whack. Here is to a week full of indoor activities and ice cold AC. 🙏

COMMUNITY NEWS

~There will be a full closure of the Lakeview Recreation Center on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. This impacts all areas of the center. This is due to the water being shut off for the water heater replacement. Please be aware on June 11 and 12, the center will be open but there will be no hot water available. Thank you for your understanding.

~Sun City West group, Computers West, is collecting old cell phones in support of Cell Phones for Soldiers. Old unused cell phones can be donated at several drop box locations throughout Sun City West. Look for the Cell Phones for Soldiers boxes in the Computers West office at Palm Ridge as well as PORA, the R. H. Johnson Library, the Posse, the Fire District Administration Office, Helping Hands and Credit Union West branches.. (link)

~E-bikes are very popular currently, they provide the rider with the opportunity to go further with less effort, but they also go faster, which can be a problem in some locations. Recreation Centers of Sun City West officials are reminding residents no motorized vehicles are allowed on the Javelina Trail. And this also includes e-bikes.

The trail is north of Deer Valley Drive an is open to pedestrians, runners and traditional bicycles.

Be considerate of other residents on this trail, keep your E-bike on the street. Sun City West’s Urban Walking Guide, as well as a bike route recommended by the Cyclists Club, can be found here.

~The first Cinnabon Swirl location in Arizona is now open, at the corner of Happy Valley Road & Lake Pleasant Road, in Peoria. Cinnabon Swirl offers unique mashup dessert items unavailable anywhere else, using cinnamon rolls and soft serve ice cream from Carvel. (link)

Last week’s question was ‘In what decade did Arizona have a Navy?’

Arizona briefly had a "navy". This small naval force was created in 1934 during a dispute with California and the federal government over Parker Dam. The "navy" consisted of two boats, the Julia B and the Nellie T. Bush, and was deployed to inspect the dam's construction without Arizona's permission. The boats became tangled in cables from the dam's construction, highlighting the comical nature of the situation
