COMMUNITY NEWS

~BNSF Railway Co.’s planned rail hub project, which has faced delays & pushback from local residents, is dealing with another delay in the vote for an approval of rezoning. The vote by the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors will now take place on November 5th. (link)

~The Books Around The Corner used bookstore, located inside the Bell Branch Sun City Library, will be returning to normal business hours on September 1st. They will be open each day from 930am-330pm. ~I want to make sure it is clear which Basha’s location is closing. Only the SUN CITY WEST store is closing on September 26, 2025.

Bashas’ has been a go-to grocery stop in Sun City West for years, but the store has announced it will soon be closing. For many residents, it’s been more than just a place to shop, it’s been part of the daily routine and a friendly neighborhood spot. The news has folks wondering what will move into the space next and how it will change shopping options nearby.

The store will be closing on September 26, 2025. 

ARIZONA TRIVIA

Last week’s trivia question was ‘What famous discovery was made from the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona?’ The answer was, The Planet Pluto.

Back in 1930, Clyde Tombaugh discovered the planet Pluto at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff. Using a blink comparator and nights of careful observation, Tombaugh spotted the tiny moving speck that turned out to be our solar system’s ninth planet (at least until its reclassification in 2006). Today, Lowell Observatory remains a hub for astronomy and stargazing, welcoming visitors who want to walk in the footsteps of discovery right here in northern Arizona.

[Sun City] Don’t miss your chance to learn how to golf at this free one-hour golf clinic with renowned golf instructor Kent Chase. The clinic will be held from 8-9am on Saturday, August 30th at the Sun City Country Club GPS Learning Center. (link & map)

The Friends of the R.H. Johnson Library has an immediate need for volunteers to help with book sorting and book transport, in support of their book sales which directly support our library. The most immediate need is for book transporters. Book transporters take crates of donations from the library to the storage shed behind the R.H. Johnson Social Hall. This volunteer job does require use of your personal vehicle and the ability to lift and stack heavy crates. If you are interested, please contact the library at [email protected].
